Workers' Compensation Class Codes Related to Non-Emergency Medical Transportation
Employees are grouped into classification codes based on what they do for their job. The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) currently utilizes nearly 800 class codes to help insurance companies categorize employees. Insurance companies create a manual rate for each class code in order to price a policy.
Properly classifying workers is an important part of the quote process. Mis-classified employers may end up paying too much for coverage or owing too much after an audit.
Class Code 7382 | Non-Emergency Medical Transportation
Businesses primarily engaged in providing special needs transportation to the infirm, elderly or handicapped. Many of these companies will use specially equipped vehicles tp provide transportation. Transportation is typically to and from appointments related to medical needs. Rides to and from work would not be contemplated under NEMT insurance. Medicare and specialized local and state programs often help fund the cost of non emergency transportation.
Bus companies generally utilize the same class code- 7382, but underwriting requirements vary considerably. Ambulance services are typically rated in a separate class code (7370) regardless of whether or not they are operated by a hospital or private ambulatory service. Garage and mechanic operations may be separated classified under class code 8385.
Alternative State Class Codes for Non-Emergency Medical Transportation:
Sometimes a state will deviate from the industry class code recommended by NCCI. Instead of the NCCI code, they may require the utilization of a state specific class code for certain business segments.
