Workers' Compensation Codes Related to Roofing

Employees are grouped into classification codes based on their job duties and work functions. The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) currently utilizes nearly 800 class codes to help insurance companies and agents categorize employees for rating purposes. Insurance companies set a base manual rate for each class code in order to begin pricing a policy.

Properly classifying workers is an important part of the quote process. Mis-classified employees can cost small businesses thousands of dollars. You could end up paying too much for coverage or owing more money after an annual audit.

Class Code 5551 | Roofing Contractors

Class code 5551 the standard classification for most roofing contractors. It covers contractors who perform installation and repair of new and existing roofs on residential and commercial properties. Work may include flat, sloped, and builtup roofs and may include the installation or repair of joists, trusses, rafters, decks, sheathing, etc. Materials utilized may include shingles, metals, hot tar, composite materials, concrete aggregates, slate, tile or felt paper.

Class Code 8227 | Construction Yard

Larger roofing companies who maintain a permanent facility or yard for material storage and maintenance of equipment will often utilize this classification on their policy for employees exclusively dedicated to the facility or yard.

Class Code 5645 | Residential Construction

When roofing is performed in conjunction with the construction of a residential dwelling, by employees of the same general contractor, then roofing may be applicable to this code. Applies only to residential construction under 3 stories.

Alternative State Class Codes for Roofing Contractors:

Sometimes a state will deviate from the industry class code recommended by NCCI. Instead of the NCCI code, they may require the utilization of a state specific class code for certain business segments.

Class Code State
5552 | Roofing Contractors California
659 | Roofing- All Kinds Delaware / Pennsylvania
5545 | Roofing Contractors New York

related: roofer, sheet metal roofing, shake roofing, shingle roofing, asphalt roofing, roof coating, copper roofing, skylight installation, roof pressure washing, waterproofing, solar panel installation on roofs.

What Does Workers' Comp Cover?

What does workers comp cover?

Workers' comp coverage protects employees when injured. It makes good financial sense for both parties.

Injuries and accidents happen. A workers' comp policy is a no-fault system that pays for these accidents and claims. It's required by law in most states.
  • Loss of income for employees unable to perform job duties
  • Medical expenses for employees injured on the job
  • Retraining expenses for employees unable to return
  • Permanent injury or disability for lasting injuries
  • Survivor benefits if employees are killed on the job

Coverage does not protect employers from everything. Sometimes employees and employers can be negligent.

Workmans comp does not cover negligence
In some instances, workers' compensation coverage will not protect employers or employees from the legal liability resulting from a workplace injury.
  • Injuries resulting from a violation of the law
  • Incidents resulting from employees' use fo drugs or alcohol
  • Injuries that did not occur in connection with the job
  • Clear company policy violations
  • Injuries that did not occur in connection with the job
