According to a 2010 study completed by The OR Department of Consumer Business & Services, Michigan ranked 23rd in the nation in average workers compensation premium rates. Although the study shows an increase from 2008 when Michigan ranked 32nd overall, employers in Michigan are still enjoying premium rates close to the national median. Michigan rates are 4% higher than the median average.

Most Michigan employers will benefit from shopping their workers compensation rates with 3 or more private insurance companies each policy period.  Rates do vary considerably between workers comp carriers based on profitability and claims history for the company.

Michigan Rates and Workers Compensation Class Codes

Michigan is not an NCCI state.  Workers Compensation in Michigan is under the jurisdiction of the Compensation Advisory Organization of Michigan, or CAOM. MI does not publish comparative data for class codes.  CAOM does publish assigned risk rates for each calendar year on its website:

In Michigan, there is no government or Department of Insurance regulation of classification codes for private insurance companies.  This means that any insurance carrier authorized to sell workers compensation in Michigan is free to set their own rates, discounts, and credits.  This makes Michigan extremely unique compared to the rest of the United States.

Michigan Workers Compensation Placement Facility

The Michigan Workers Compensation Placement Facility is administered by CAOM.  It functions as the state's Assigned Risk Plan, or State Fund Insurance Program.  This program exists for employers who are unable to purchase workers compensation insurance from a private insurance company.  Workers compensation rates are

Michigan Experience Modifications

Since Michigan is outside of NCCI jurisdiction.  CAOM calculates experience mod's for all Michigan exposure.  Additionally, the state modification factors are not combinable with other state experience modifiers to create interstate modifiers.  This means employers doing business in Michigan and other states may have separate modifiers applied to in state policies and out of state policies.

Purchasing Coverage in Michigan

Since each workers compensation carrier doing business in Michigan is permitted to set their own rates via a competitive market system, rates for each of the 600+ classification codes will vary depending on each carriers' appetite and prior claims experience.  All employers in Michigan are encouraged to shop their workers compensation rates on an annual basis.

At Workers Compensation Shop.com, business owners can expect our agents to market every policy with all of our partners in order to find the lowest rates and premium.  We will also negotiate additional premium discounts and policy credits for employers who have good experience modifiers and limited losses or claims.
